4th century A.D. Egypt under the Roman Empire. Violent religious upheaval in the streets of Alexandria spills over into the city’s famous Library. Trapped inside its walls, the brilliant astronomer Hypatioa (Rachel Weisz) and her disciples fight to save the wisdom of the Ancient World. Among them, the two men competing for her heart; the witty privileged Orestes and Davus, Hypatia’s young slave, who is torn between his secret love for her and the freedom he knows can be his if he chooses to join the unstoppable surge of the Christians.

Alejandro Amenabar’s Roman-Egypt epic “Agora” has become this year’s highest-grossing local film in Spain – taking $10.3 million in just four days. The movie has yet to have a U.S. release date penciled in, but suffice it to say, the movie will end up one of the 10 2010 Best Picture Oscar nominees if released in 2009. And Rachel Weisz will be a frontrunner to win the Best Actress Oscar. The movie “Agora” was financed by Spain but the entire movie is in English.
