A Star Is Born

Bradley Cooper makes his directorial debut with the fourth big screen version of A Star Is Born, which Clint Eastwood produced. (He was originally attached to direct, but handed the film over to Bradley Cooper, whom he directed in American Sniper).

In A Star Is Born, a movie star (Bradley Cooper) helps a young singer/actress (Lady Gaga, who is going by her real name, Stefani Germanotta, for her big screen debut), find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.

The first A Star Is Born arrived in theaters in 1937 and starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, both winning the Oscars of Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively, and the film winning the Best Picture Oscar. The film also won the Best Screenplay Oscar.

The second version appeared in theaters in 1954, featuring Judy Garland and James Mason. Both Judy Garland and James Mason were nominated for Oscars for their roles in the film, neither winning.

Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson headlined the third incarnation, which was released in 1976.

Forty-two years is the longest between big screen versions of the film, this version and the 1976 episode, which won two Oscars; one for Best Song, (Evergreen, Love Theme From A Star Is Born, by Barbra Streisand) and Best Cinematography.
